What I Wish I Knew Before Buying My First car brush Car Rim Brush Manufacturer Set I've bought 4 different brush sets now. Here's what I learned the hard way, so you don't waste money: Don't buy the 20-piece sets for $15 They look like a great deal – 20 different brushes! But every single one is cheap plastic with sharp bristles. They scratch everything, shed bristles everywhere, and fall apart in a month. I still find bristles from my first set in my car. You only need 5 brushes, not 20 Save your money and get quality versions of these 5: 1. Large soft microfiber body brush 2. Long-reach soft wheel brush 3. Stiff bristle tire/wheel well brush 4. Medium boar's hair interior brush 5. Tiny detail brush for vents/lug nuts That's it. Everything else is redundant. Check the ferrule before buying The ferrule is the ring holding the bristles. If it's exposed metal, walk away. It will rust and scratch your paint. Look for rubberized or plastic-covered ferrules, or brushes where the ferrule sits completely inside the handle. Natural vs synthetic - Boar's hair (natural): Best for interior and delicate surfaces, naturally rounded tips, holds static for dusting - Microfiber (synthetic): Best for body washing, holds tons of soap and water - Nylon (synthetic): Best only for tires and heavy dirt – never on paint or interior Handle material matters Plastic handles get slippery when soapy. Rubberized or textured grips are worth the extra cost. Nothing worse than your brush slipping out of your hand mid-wash and hitting the car. My current set cost me $45 total for those 5 brushes. Had them 8 months, still like new. Compare that to going through 3 cheap sets in the same time period.
